Welcome to our online travel diary website. We thought that it would be great to give you a brief history of what we do, why we do it and where we want to go.
So what is backpackersdiary.com?
Its all about providing you with a fun way to keep friends and family in touch with your travel stories and to provide you with a permanent diary of your travels online through entries, photos and interactive maps. At first, being backpackers ourselves, we did aim the site primarily at backpackers. However, we are now more than aware that even 'Grandma Pat' is using our site - game on!
So when was backpackersdiary.com born and where did the idea come from?
The idea for an online travel diary or travel blog website was formed in 2001 whilst a few of us were travelling in New Zealand. Actually, we were all chilling out in a spa with a few beers when we started talking about how great it is sending friends and family emails gloating about our adventures. Then, in a beer inspired moment, the idea of an online travel diary was discussed. The problem with emails was that you could never remember who you had sent them to and you didn't have a record of your trip. So being the geeks we are we set to creating the site upon return. After many months of late nights and red bull the first version of the site was released for us to try out on our next trips. It didn't take us long to realise what a great idea this was ( if we say so ourselves). Now many more travel blogs, diaries are springing up all over the place which we feal is a testiment to the powers of beer and brainstorming!
So how do you make money and whats the catch?
In short we didn't do this to make money, we have created this site because we get a buzz knowing that people are enjoying our idea. We know thats really geeky, but hey its great to know that we have helped so many people share their travel stories all over the world. There is nothing better than walking through Singapore airport and seeing a traveller using your site! The only thing we do charge for is that extra disk space for the serious traveller uploading loads of pictures.This covers our hosting costs. IIn the future we hope to give you all huge amounts of disk space for free with a bit more sponsorship of the site. So if you are loaded and want to help all us travellers out there then contact us!
So whats planned for the future?
Too much to list but basically we aim to grow this site into a fully pledged travel forum. We love to hear ideas and suggestions from you. Its your site as well - we are just the geeks! For example one member said that it would be great if the diary update notifications were sent via SMS text messages as well as email because their mum never checked email. So after discussions with an SMS provider we added that feature.
